Integrated Arts Academy (IAA) has been recognized as the 2025 MAAP (Minnesota Association for Alternative Programs) School of the Year for its remarkable progress in student achievement, college and career readiness, and school culture transformation. Under the leadership of a new principal over the past three years, IAA has made significant strides, improving both academic performance and student engagement.
One of the most notable achievements is the dramatic increase in graduation rates, rising from 52.2% in 2021 to an impressive 82.6% in 2023. Additionally, college and career readiness (CCR) opportunities have expanded, with 63% of students participating in CCR programs last year, better preparing them for future success.
IAA has also focused on creating a positive and inclusive school culture through a variety of initiatives, including:
● Establishing a Student Senate to enhance student voice and leadership.
● Designing a school mascot to foster school spirit.
● Advocating for and securing improvements to school lunches.
● Securing funding to renovate the Student Wellness Area and hire a full-time school counselor.
● Creating a school seal to solidify identity and tradition.
● Building a new basketball court and reimagining a school garden.
● Auditing core classes and implementing a blended learning model to enhance instruction.
● Launching a student lunch work program and establishing a school pantry.
● Enforcing a cell phone policy, leading to increased engagement
● Expanding elective offerings, including three new courses and the school’s first Advanced Placement course: AP Drawing.
“This recognition as School of the Year is a testament to the dedication of our students, staff, and community,” said Angela Charboneau-Folch, Principal of Integrated Arts Academy. “We are committed to fostering an environment where students thrive academically and personally, and we are incredibly proud of the progress we’ve made together.”
IAA’s achievements highlight its commitment to innovation, student support, and academic excellence, setting a strong foundation for continued success. The team of educators from Integrated Arts Academy was presented with their award at the annual MAAP (Minnesota Association of Alternative Programs) Conference in front of over 450 alternative educators from across the state.
Integrated Arts Academy is proud to announce that Amy Spinello has been named Minnesota Association of Alternative Programs (MAAP) 2025 Teacher of the Year for her outstanding dedication to education and her exceptional ability to inspire and uplift students through the arts.
Ms. Spinello, who serves as the art teacher at Integrated Arts Academy, has been recognized for her passion, skill, and unwavering commitment to alternative education student populations. Her ability to connect with students, earn their trust, and foster both artistic talent and confidence has made a profound impact on the school community.

"In my twenty-five-year career, Ms. Spinello is one of the most highly qualified teachers I have ever worked with. She demonstrates sound judgment, fine character, and a remarkable work ethic. She not only increases academic rigor but also creates an inclusive, supportive environment where students thrive."
During her career at Integrated Arts Academy, Ms. Spinello has been instrumental in using art as a powerful tool for student expression and engagement, helping students of all skill levels develop their artistic abilities while building confidence in themselves. Her enthusiasm for teaching and dedication to student success have earned her the admiration of both students and colleagues.
The Teacher of the Year award was presented on February 6th, 2025 during the Annual MAAP Conference in Duluth, MN where over 450 alternative educators from across the state of MN gathered to celebrate Ms. Spinello’s achievement.
